The Demon King Chapters 3-6
05/25/24
Chapter Three:
First Willo mention 🥹
This just makes the ending so much sadder 🤧
WTF???
Bird 😔 🪦
Han being awkward around a girl is so funny. He's so relatable.
There were so many hints 😭
That's mother 🫶
You know when a character is introduced as being so perfect there is no way they really are that good, and they're just gonna disappoint you? Willo is proof that that is not always the case ❤️
SHE WAS THE MOTHER THAT STEPPED UP!!!
Bird is gonna regret saying this if you know what i mean 😭
HE IS RIGHT AND HE SHOULD SAY IT!
Han, you slut (affectionate)
BABY GIRL 😖 (Gavan when i catch you 😤)
Dancer didn't even know yet 😖
Chapter Four:
I remember that this was the chapter I started reading the book again. It was a Friday and I had actually stolen this book from someone else's hold, so I knew that I had to finish it soon before they missed it. So, I sat in my 8th grade homeroom and started reading.
Cinda did such a good job of showing us just how different Han and Raisa's lives were with the smallest of sentences. Like, Magret telling Raisa that her old clothes being sent to Ragmarket being equivalent to being thrown away to her, meanwhile that's how most people Han knows get clothes.
HOLY CRAP THEY GOT IT RIGHT 😭
Just giggling at Raisa looking over her room, knowing that it actually was Hanalea's old rooms.
Tears
Pls don't stick with that thought, Rai 🙏
Don't worry, Raisa. The guy that you picked will woo you up until you agree to marry him, and decades after that 🫶
I love her so much 🤧
She's so real for that
Fiona 😒
I wonder why 😒
QUEEN 👏
Bitch, know your audience 😭
All bow before the queen, Raisa ana'Marianna 🫶
Adam, you beautiful soul 👏
Micah being the first to bring up that the story of the Demon King isn't totally accurate is hilarious since the breaking was actually caused by his ancestors, not Han's. (Also, Raisa's reaction to him asking questions compared to Han telling her a completely different story that she's always known makes my heart fluttery)
Raisa has always been the smartest in the room, and I love that for her, but it also makes me sad for her
My note for the first mention of Vega is literally just "fufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufufu--"
Chapter Five:
I have a very distinct memory of reading this part the first time. I had just got home that Friday, and was prepared to finish this by the end of the weekend. I locked myself in my family's living room and read this, even tho i didn't understand like half of the lore surrounding it.
That being said, this book is way more enjoyable now that I understand the lore about the demon king and the wars and the other realms.
🤭
Han is such a nerd (affectionate)
Oh, sweetie...
It just makes me happy, okay?
The pieces were always there 😭
Thanks a lot, Cinda. Now I'm crying again.
This is literally me and my grandma smh
This is why I have to give Raisa her props whenever I can, because my girl needs all the love she can get.
LMAO
I know it's been 6 years since i read this book, and i kinda sped through this one, but how did I forget this whole Southie plot line?
Quick question, what is the other realm? We know Fellsmarch, Arden, Tamron, We'enhaven, Bruinswallow, and this chapter reminded me of the existence of the Southern Isles, but what is the seventh one? It's not Carthis is it?
FIRST CAT MENTION, MY BABY GIRL <3
I'm not crying, you are 😭
Baby boy 🥺
Hanson, that is your future wife that you're talking about 😒

Genders:
Lavanatomic - A gender under the anatomic system(link), related to lava, anatomy, the "anatomy" of lava and molten rock, the anatomy of something or someone being made up of lava, having anatomy made of lava and so on.
Firegender - Firegender is a xenogender identity in which one's gender is in a constant state of change but never truly extinguishes. It is aesthetically linked to fire as a visual metaphor or symbol.
Fiergender - Fiergender [fier coming from the word 'fiery'] is a gender related to the colours red and orange, fire, foxes, anger, and heat. This gender may feel hot, angry/annoyed, and fiery.
Infernvambatic - A gender identity related to fire and vampire bats; vampire bats that are on fire; vampire bats with fire magic; the emoji combo 🔥🦇🔥; etc...
Burninglogic - .+ a gender related to the log/wood emoji (🪵), and the fire emoji (🔥) in some way. could be the emojis on their own, the smell of campires/burning wood, the aesthetic of wood and fire, etc.
CandLitScentic - A scentic gender related to the aroma of lit candles, scented or not, the smell of a burning wick and melting wax is heavily tied to one's gender.
Firedeity - a gender connected to fire and deities, a deity associated with fire, or a deity of fire.
Ragefiric - a gender relating to raging fires, of course! one may also connect with fiery tempers or things getting burnt
Sunfiregender - a gender related to the sun and fire somehow! could be about how the sun is sometimes called a ball of fire, could be related to setting fires with sunlight, just suns and fires separately, whatever!
Volcanogender/Lavagender/Magmagender - A gender that is dormant most of the time but sometimes erupts with extreme heat and intensity, similar to how volcanoes erupt. It can be used by itself or combined with other terms, e.g. volcanoboy, volcanogirl, volcanononbinary, etc.
Pyrapanthic - A combination of pyrogender and catgender, in which your gender is connected to big cats, fire, and the way that both are violent/aggressive in nature but aren't "bad" for being that way, they just are.
Lavagender - For a few days it’ll be a stable gender, nice and consistent. But after a while it turns into something completely different. And then that something will change into another thing that’s completely different after a few days time again.
PyromaniEnigmatic - an -enigmatic gender that relates to ones pyromania, being hard to fully understand and deal with, smoke and flames from the urges of pyromania obscuring clear vision and understanding of ones gender and ones pyromania being so deeply tied to ones gender that t becomes hard to understand it from any other angle but by the light of a burning flame.
Pyrofluid - A gender defined by a strong fire aesthetic, like pyrogender, but in this case a person can change between feeling “warm” and feeling “cold” about their gender. A pyrogender person always "feels warm" about the gender, it may just dwindle but never extinguish. Pyrofluid people can “feel cold”, and when that happens it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll be agender or on the agender spectrum. It may just mean that they end up feeling apathetic about their gender, not wanting to think about it.

oc ask game: aesthetic edition for Leia Gould! I can't tell if she's new, but she's new to me.
also asked by @wonderguards! thank you both! (leia's actually one of my older ocs but for some reason my brain is like 'lets focus on her lol')
what color do you associate with them?
okay i have two options - the first is pink. leia is a prototypical girly girl and pink is featured in a lot of her aesthetics (as well as being a colour featured in the lesbian flag). the second is a pair of colours - that being blue and yellow, both being hayden high's colours and featured on her cheer uniform
2. what animal do you associate with them?
lions. probably because my brain associates both her and mike with prototypical cat behavior but leia is very prideful, strong and - much like female lions - acts as the main 'breadwinner' for her family
3. what element do you associate with them?
fire. leia's a hot-head. thats all you need to know
4. what flower/plant do you associate with them?
so a few years ago i reblogged a hsm but only the memes gifset to my main blog and joked that if i was able to draw, id draw leia in the lei and flower crown pose so... pink hibiscus flowers! (they also symbolise perfection which isnt a problem leia has, no sir, she's not a perfectionist--)
5. what part of their appearance do you associate with them the most?
her hair! she's got glorious blonde locks that are genetic and unattainable
6. what hobby do you associate with them?
aside from cheer? maybe something to do with music! she probably also is a good dancer
7. what school subject do you associate with them?
P.E.!
8. what would they answer to one or all of these about themselves?
she'd probably answer most of these the same, but she'd say she's a water element because she's "cool and collected" (sure jan, sure)
#OC: Leia#story: dirty little secret#im so glad my self indulgent oc baby is getting representation!#i think i started writing her on my old old writing blog and then i was debating bringing her back#but then my birthday came around and i realised that 'hey im 24 i can do what i want!' and found baby siobhan's fave movie#and ressurected it in this oc lol

Top Reads of 2022!
In 2022, I didn’t read as many books as I have in the previous years, so there are books that released in 2022 that I didn’t get to read yet. Hopefully, I will! Here is the list of my top reads of 2022!
👑 3 Sam Mariano books:
~Descent: Descent was a dynamite, intoxicating read, so much so that I lost track of time!
Descent blurb:
Calvin will do anything for me... except leave me alone.
We were strangers, as far as I knew.
He saw me once, but didn’t introduce himself like he could have.
Calvin Cutler. Nice to meet you.
But there’s nothing nice about Calvin Cutler.
He’s ruthless and single-minded, and he zeroed in on me—a hapless target for his dark and twisted appetites.
In the depths of Hell, I first looked into his sinful brown eyes, felt the greedy touch of his demanding hands for the first time.
Not the last time, though.
He wanted more. So much more.
He wanted me, whether I wanted him or not.
Warning: Descent is a standalone dark romance with an unrepentant bad guy hero. This book is for readers who enjoy stories where the villain gets the girl. It is intended for adults only and contains subject matter some might find triggering.

~Undertow: Undertow pulled me under in the best way, because it consumed until the end!
Undertow blurb:
Hayden
Cheerful, doe-eyed, mildly neurotic—Gemma Cane is not at all my type, but when the brown-eyed beauty stormed into my office, all fired up and wearing the garb of a belly dancer, I couldn’t tear my gaze away.
She was seeking justice, but I had something else in mind.
She couldn’t afford me, but I had other ideas about that, too…
Gemma
Arrogant, cocky, an outright bully—Hayden Atwater is the sort of man I usually go out of my way to avoid, but when my horrible neighbor stepped way over the line, I wanted to crush him, and to do that, I knew I’d have to fight fire with even hotter fire.
The notoriously cutthroat lawyer was the first weapon I could think of, but the last man I should trust. I realized that as my anger subsided and I registered the predatory gleam in his stormy ocean eyes.
I left his office empty-handed, but now, he won’t leave me alone.
I know there can never be anything between us and we are completely impossible, but that word isn’t in Hayden’s vocabulary. If there’s no room for him in my life, he’ll make room.
But then, disaster strikes.
Surely now, even Hayden can see that some things really are impossible, and maybe we’re one of them.

~Sophie’s Surrender: It was spectacular and spellbinding! I was spellbound by Silvan and Sophie’s story, because I couldn’t stop reading until the end!
Sophie’s Surrender blurb:
Men have always committed atrocities chasing after their desires.
The men in my family have it down to an art form.
Personally, I’ve never experienced a desire that ran so deep it poisoned my soul.
Until the night I laid eyes on her.
It’s really too bad she didn’t feel the same way. It could have been a fairytale.
I guess our story was meant to be something a little more twisted.
No matter.
I desire Sophie Bradwell, and I don’t care how many terrible things I have to do to get her… and keep her.

👑 Bad Boys of Redwood Academy by Emilia Rose
~Stepbrother: This book was a rollercoaster; the pacing of this book surprised me in the best way, then it took surprising turns too. It was much deeper and darker than I thought it would be, and that’s what made it sensational!
Stepbrother blurb:
I never meant to fall for my billionaire stepbrother.
Allie
Keeping up a perfect image is hard, especially when my stepbrother is the notorious Jace Harbor. With my head buried in books and the haunting memories of my father’s death, I want nothing more than to end my senior year on a high note, so I can get out of this town. But my stepbrother has other plans for me.
Jace
Swimming in money, girls, and high school football stardom, I can’t wait for graduation. I’m tired of the liars, cheaters, and football groupies at Redwood Academy. But when my father forces me to spend two weeks alone with Allie, I remember that Redwood isn’t all that bad. I remember the girl I fell in love with before our parents married.
Can Jace Harbor redeem himself after what he did to Allie? Can Allie forgive the guy who broke her heart sophomore year? Will Allie and Jace find love, or is their little fling just that—a meaningless hookup to help them forget about Redwood?
*Stepbrother is a new-adult step-sibling romance and the first book in the Bad Boys of Redwood Academy series of stand-alones. This series does not have to be read in order.
Universal buy link: https://books2read.com/Stepbrother-Redwood-Academy
~The Bad Boy: This Bad Boy Blaise was the best, because he may have been a bad boy but he was sweet too; Blaise and Vera together were blazing fire!
The Bad Boy blurb:
The rich bad boy found out that I write smvt!
When the popular skateboarding punk at my high school discovers that I write dirty romance books, he promises to tell the entire school and ruin my life if I don’t do everything he wants of me. Desperate to make it through the rest of senior year unseen, I reluctantly go along with it.
I skip class to meet him in the back hallways and show up at the skatepark to satisfy his every last need. I tell myself that I’m only doing this because of the blackmail he’s holding over me, but I can’t help the jealousy that boils inside me when he begins hanging out with the school slvt.
Blaise Harleen might think that I’m his good girl, but he’s mine. All mine.
*The Bad Boy is a steamy new adult romance and the third book in the Bad Boys of Redwood Academy series of standalones. This series does not have to be read in order.
Universal buy link: https://books2read.com/the-bad-boy-redwood-academy
~Honorable Mention: Poison-I cried, smiled and gasped in shock during this book plus the steamy scenes were just that, so pick this Poison!
Poison blurb:
I thought talking to a sexy stranger online would be harmless—until I find out he goes to my high school. Now, he and his crew won’t stop blackmailing me.
Between studying for exams, obeying strict curfews, and dealing with overprotective parents who expect me to reign at the top of Redwood Academy’s senior class, I just want to have some fun. But getting messed up with the Poison boys isn’t what I expect to happen when I log in to an online chat room.
Corrupt. Cruel. Callous.
Poison is everything wrong with Redwood Academy. They have no problem with burning Redwood Academy to ashes, exposing the wealthy for the snakes they truly are, and blackmailing an innocent girl they met online.
If anyone finds out what I have done, my good-girl reputation will be tarnished.
Will I be able to keep these bad boys at bay? Or will they suck me into their bloodstained, havoc-filled world?
*Poison is a new-adult reverse harem romance and the second book in the Bad Boys of Redwood Academy series of stand-alones. This series does not have to be read in order.
Universal buy link: https://books2read.com/Poison-Redwood-Academy
👑 Legacy of Gods series by Rina Kent
~God of Malice: After not immediately being pulled into Glyn and Killian’s story, I ended up loving this book and became mesmerized by it!
God of Malice blurb:
I caught the attention of a monster. I didn't ask for it. Didn't even see it coming. But the moment I do, it's too late. Killian Carson is a predator wrapped in sophisticated charm. He's cold-blooded, manipulative, and lacks limits. The worst part is that no one sees his devil side. I do. And that will cost me everything. I run, but the thing about monsters? They always chase.
Buy links:
Amazon: https://amzn.to/3KxBSiG
Amazon Worldwide: mybook.to/GodOfMalice
~God of Pain: I was excited for Creighton and Annika’s story, and it was phenomenal and wrecked me in the best way!
God of Pain blurb:
I made a terrible mistake. Being a mafia princess, I knew my fate was already decided. But I went ahead and longed for the wrong one. Creighton King is bad news with a gorgeous exterior. He's silent, brooding, and obviously emotionally unavailable. So I thought it's over. Until he awakens a beast inside me. My name is Annika Volkov and I'm Creighton's worst enemy. He won't stop until he breaks me. Or I break him.
Buy links:
Amazon: https://amzn.to/3AC5Ct6
Amazon Worldwide: https://mybook.to/GodOfPain
~God of Wrath: Jeremy and Cecily’s love story was slow yet magical, and I wholeheartedly loved this emotional, rollercoaster ride!
God of Wrath blurb:
I'm trapped by the devil. What started as an innocent mistake turned into actual hell. In my defense, I didn't mean to get involved with a mafia prince. But he barged through my defenses anyway. He stalked me from the shadows and stole me from the life I know. Jeremy Volkov might appear charming, but a true predator lurks inside. He's out to possess, own, and keep me. But I have no plans to stick around in his blood-soaked world. Or so I think.
Buy links:
Amazon: https://amzn.to/3d7fkKY
Amazon Worldwide: https://mybook.to/GodofWrath
Honorable Mention: Empire of Sin and Empire of Lust
~Empire of Sin: The beginning of this book was sinfully delicious and hot between Anastasia and Knox, and it did not slow down until the end!
Empire of Sin blurb:
I’m not the type who has one night stands. It wasn’t supposed to happen, okay? A couple of drinks and a sinful British accent later and I’m in bed with a stranger.
Of course, I left first thing in the morning because I’m a responsible adult.
An adult who has a new job that I need in order to keep my double life a secret. Little did I know I’m not, in fact, responsible. Because the stranger I left in bed? Yeah, he’s not a stranger after all. He’s my new boss.
Knox Van Doren might have a charming smile, but a true villain lurks beneath it all. And like any villain, he’ll use my sin against me...

~Empire of Lust: Empire of Lust was extraordinary, and a perfect enemies to lovers romance between Kingsley and Aspen!
Empire of Lust blurb:
When I slept with a faceless jock as a teen, I didn't think I would become pregnant. I also didn't think I would lose that child. Several years later, I find out that my daughter is alive and I'm given a second chance. One problem, though. The faceless jock isn't so faceless anymore. He has a name everyone fears; Kingsley Shaw. A ruthless bastard. A heartless devil. And most importantly, my daughter's father. Oh, and he hates me as much as I hate him. We're out to destroy one another with all methods available. Including a dangerous game of lust that might lead to our downfall.

👑 Westbrook Elite series by Cambria Hebert
~Wet: Dive into Wet, because Rory and Ryan’s love story plus the pace, flow and emotions of the story kept me engaged until the very end!
Wet blurb:
Making decisions I regret is basically a hobby.
So I guess it really wasn’t that surprising when I went out on a date with an Elite.
And then he tried to assault me.
I might be small, but I’m not meek. I fought him off… then went straight to the dean.
He didn’t believe me. No one does.
And now my date from hell is in revenge mode, and I somehow end up in the campus pool.
Did I mention I can’t swim?
Lucky for me, a knight in shining armor saves me from drowning.
Except he’s not wearing shining armor. He’s naked.
And he’s also Elite.
Seriously, what is up with these Elite swimmers?
Of course, I have no intention of ever seeing his very good-looking, naked highness again.
Elite obviously can’t be trusted.
Until he wraps me in his hoodie and promises to believe me.
Now I’m drowning againbut this time in his enigmatic cobalt eyes and addictive touch.
My only oxygen is him. I think I maybe could fall in love.
But will he keep his promise when I tell him the truth about his teammate?
Or will trusting Ryan with my heart and my life be just another decision to regret?

~Wingspan: I was emotional from the beginning of this book; I was shocked with plot twists that I did not see coming; and I laughed at certain times which relieved the tension. I wholeheartedly loved this Wingspan!
Wingspan blurb:
Ever feel like you’re being watched?
It’s an awareness so familiar I adapted to it long ago.
Then I enrolled at Westbrook University to chase my dream
and make up for someone else’s lost one.
The prying eyes Id known almost since birth…
They closed.
Even still, I never got too close.
I made friends with everyone but confided in no one.
My dates were carefully chosen,
meaning I went out with guys I didn’t really like.
And then I was attacked.
I slept in Jamie’s bed while he stayed near me on the floor.
He gave me his number, told me to call.
Oh, I wanted to call. But I didn’t.
Now those invisible, observant eyes that always seemed familiar have returned.
But this time? They chill me to the bone.
Someone is watching. Lurking.
And it’s only a matter of time until whoever is out there does more than stare.
The only place I feel truly safe is wrapped in the massive wingspan of an Elite swimmer.
The very man I know I need to avoid.
But as shit goes down, it becomes clear I’m going to have to surrender something…
My heart or my life.

👑 The Ritual by Shantel Tessier
This Ritual was riveting from the first page until the last, and my dark heart loved every minute of it! It was dark and dirty yet hot between Ryat & Blakely, and their love story actually made me swoon by the end.
The Ritual blurb:
The Chosen One
I vow. You vow. We vow.
Barrington University is home of the Lords, a secret society that requires their blood in payment. They are above all—the most powerful men in the world. They devote their lives to violence in exchange for power. And during their senior year, they are offered a chosen one.
People think growing up with money is freeing, but I promise you, it’s not. My entire life has been planned out for me. I never got the chance to do what I wanted until Ryat Alexander Archer came along and gave me an option for a better life. He offered me what no one else ever had—freedom.
I chose to be his. He made me believe that anyway, but it was just another lie. A way that the Lords manipulate you into doing what they want.
After being sucked into the dark, twisted world of the Lords, I embraced my new role and allowed Ryat to parade me around like the trophy I was to him. But like all things, what started out as a game soon became a fight for survival. And the only way out was death.

👑 Requiem by Callie Hart
Requiem was resplendent and had intricate plot. Once the truth started to unravel it was simultaneously beautiful and heartbreaking. Sorrell and Theo’s remarkable, epic love story was full of heart-wrenching emotions that I will never forget.
Requiem blurb:
SORRELL
He’s going to pay for what he’s done…
Theo Merchant was born into a kind of privilege I’ve never known.
He has everything I don’t: Money. A private school education. Popularity. A bright and shiny future, full of success to look forward to. He took the only thing I had going for me—my best friend, Rachel. Now that she’s gone, I have nothing left to lose
I will infiltrate his world.
I will cradle his worthless heart in my hands.
I will burn down his entire life and destroy everything he holds dear.
I haven’t enrolled at Toussaint Academy to learn.
I’ve come to destroy a monster…
…and I won’t leave until he’s dead.
THEO
She has no idea what she’s getting herself into…
Sorrell Voss is intelligent, caustic as hell, and quite possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. She’s also going to get herself f#cking killed.
She’s a fool if she thinks I’ll go easy on her just because she’s broken.
You don’t venture into the lion’s den and walk away unscathed.
She has her secrets. That’s fine.
*My* secrets will unravel her until she comes apart at the seams.
She will bow to me, and she will break.
Then, and only then, will I make her mine.

👑 Say You Swear by Meagan Brandy
I swear this book consumed and nearly killed me, but in the best way! I felt this book in my heart; this author ripped it out and only put it back in at the end after I had cried a lot of tears. This book wrapped around me like a blanket, because it was all I could think about all day while the characters felt like real people.
Say You Swear blurb:
For years, I’ve dreamt of what college life could bring and while some things changed, there was always one constant.
It didn’t matter how wild I allowed my imagination to run, it always led me to the same place in the end.
It led me to him.
My future was clear, and he was it.
Until suddenly ... he wasn’t.
Now I’m a shell of who I was, on a path too blurry to follow, and I see no way out.
No way up.
They say first loves last forever.
That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.

FE8 Novelization Translation: Book 2 - Front Cover & Other Introductory Pages
Yup, you read that right! It’s time for book 2 already!
And here’s the big announcement - I recalculated the number of parts I’m going to split the chapters into, so I don’t have to take a break in-between books 1 and 2! Some chapters have more scene breaks than others, so it was an easy thing to do without compromising pacing at all.
Let’s get started!!

Author
TAKASE Mie
TAKASE Mie was born on July 31st in Tokyo. She graduated from Waseda University. Her recent hobby is the cello, which she was inspired to start learning after watching a certain sailing movie. Though she has dreams of one day being able to play Bach’s cello suites, she still has a hard time with even basic scales.

Princess Eirika vowed to rebuild her home country of Renais, gained the help of their ally nation Frelia, and started to fight back. As her army marches, she crosses paths with all sorts of people, and grows her group of allies. Finally, they make it to Renvall Castle, a critical strategic location for the Grado Army, and attack it. During the battle, she succeeds in reuniting with her elder twin brother Ephraim, who disappeared on the front lines. However, after having only a moment to confirm each other’s safety, Ephraim states that he will march to Grado Castle. Eirika volunteers to travel to the Theocracy of Rausten to support him, but then...

Eirika
The Princess of Renais. She is kind, and does not like war itself, but still dedicated herself to the current war without hesitation to retake her country, a goal entrusted to her by her father, the king.
Fado
The king of the Kingdom of Renais. In his youth, he was renowned for his military prowess, and he is adored by his people as an honest statesman.
Seth
Though he is the youngest of all Renais’ generals, his loyalty and superb skills in both combat and discernment make him the ideal image of a knight.
Franz
He may have just only become a full-fledged knight, but he has a very serious and earnest personality, and is skilled in combat as well, ensuring him a promising future.
Valter
A general of the Grado Empire also known as the Moonstone. He was discharged from the army for the crime of massacring ordinary citizens for fun. However...
Gilliam
A devoted knight of Frelia with a long history as a fearless soldier. He is a man of few words, but his power is known throughout the entire Frelian Army.
Tana
The princess of the Kingdom of Frelia. In contrast to her friendly personality that is beloved by all of her retainers and servants, she also has military experience, and is an active member of the pegasus knight unit.
Hayden
The king of the Kingdom of Frelia. His resourcefulness is unparalleled, and has earned him the title “The Wise King.” He is a long time friend of Fado’s and spares no effort in aiding Eirika and her allies.
Vanessa
An outstanding knight, even among the prided Frelian pegasus knights. She is very serious, but kind.
Moulder
A priest. Within his calm appearance lies a very intelligent mind. He can not only heal with staves, but is also knowledgeable in medicine.
Selena
A mage general of Grado, also known as the Fluorspar. One of the empire’s three generals. She has vowed her undying loyalty to Emperor Vigarde.
Ross
A boy living in Ide Village in Renais. He is saved by Eirika and her allies when his home is attacked by bandits.

A girl born in Lark Village in Renais. Her home was burned down by bandits. She cries easily, but undoubtedly inherited her grandfather’s famous skills with a bow.
Colm
Neimi’s childhood friend. They were the only two to survive the bandit attack on their hometown. He has sticky fingers, but is kind to Neimi.
Artur
He meets Eirika and the others while carrying out the orders given to him by his monastery to purge the lands of monsters. He has a deep love of learning and is a devoted monk.
Lute
Artur’s childhood friend. Though it is true that she is an exceptionally skilled mage, the words and actions she chooses as a result of her confidence in that fact are a bit detached from reality.
L’Arachel
A young woman with a strong sense of justice on a continuing journey to take out the monsters roaming the lands. She actually appears to be of noble standing based upon the way her companions talk to and act around her.
Dozla
A warrior traveling with L’Arachel. He cannot hide the fact that he is her loyal retainer, though perhaps it is more accurate to say that he is not really trying. He’s not one to sweat the small stuff.
Rennac
He is actually a master thief, and just under contract with L’Arachel, but all she does is drag him around everywhere.
Natasha
A cleric being pursued by the Grado Army because she was deemed a traitor. She asks to travel with Eirika so she can spread the word to other nations about the strange things occurring within the empire.
Joshua
A skilled mercenary who loves to gamble above all else. He becomes Eirika’s ally after losing a bet with Natasha.

The prince of Renais and Eirika’s older twin brother. He is blessed with a strong sense of justice and decisiveness. He also excels in spearmanship, and his skills are highly respected by the cavalier unit.
Kyle
A loyal retainer who has served Ephraim ever since he joined the cavalier unit. An exceptional knight who’s skilled in serving as a guard.
Forde
Like Kyle, he serves Ephraim as both a guard and close confidant. He and Kyle have been rivals since they were young. He is also Franz’s older brother.
Orson
The commanding officer of the Renais cavalier unit. He is a devoted cavalier who has served the royal family for years, and that King Fado trusts deeply, however...
Innes
The prince of The Kingdom of Frelia. He always has a strong sense of duty towards his role as a member of the royal family. He is extremely confident in himself, and has the strength and abilities to back it up.
Myrrh
A girl who is neither human nor monster, but a member of the dragon tribe. She leaves The Darkling Woods to tell the humans about the abnormalities occurring across the continent.
Amelia
A girl who became a soldier because of her respect for General Duessel. However, she feels lost when she learns that he opposes the war.
Gerik
The brave leader of a band of mercenaries. He joins Eirika’s army because Prince Innes hired him as his guard.
Tethys
A dancer whose bewitching dances attract the soldiers around her and heighten their morale. Once she joined Gerik’s Mercenaries, she became an indispensable member of the group.
Marisa
A female mercenary is rare enough, but her beauty and skills make her even more of a diamond in the rough. She is registered in the guild as a member of the same mercenary group as Gerik.
Ewan
Tethys’ little brother. He aspires to become a mage, and convinced a renowned sage to become his teacher. He is at the age where he cannot help but want to be treated as his own person.
Saleh
The sage of Caer Pelyn, and the only person of this age to associate with those of the dragon tribe. His abilities are very widely known. He is also Ewan’s teacher.
Glen
A general of the Grado Empire who is also known as the Sunstone. One of the empire’s three generals. He also questions the current war…
Cormag
A dragon knight of Grado. Glen’s younger brother. He trusts and respects his brother completely, but after a certain event happens, he leaves the Grado Army.
Lyon
The prince of the Grado Empire. He has been a friend of Eirika and Ephraim’s for many years. His research into dark magic has made him even more knowledgeable in magic than the palace mages.
Ismaire
The beautiful queen of the Kingdom of Jehanna, known as “The Queen of White Dunes.” She has gained the overwhelming support of the people for her accomplishments in running the country since her husband’s passing.
Duessel
A general of the Grado Empire with the title “Obsidian.” One of the Three Imperial Generals. Though he has been accused of being a traitor, he is working together with Ephraim to warn the emperor of the error of his ways.
Knoll
A palace mage of the Grado Empire who studied dark magic alongside Lyon. He is one of the few people who knows the reason why the emperor, once known for his virtue, changed so drastically.
Caellach
A general of Grado known as the “Tiger Eye.” He started out as a mere mercenary, and rose up to his current position, but he is an ambitious person who wishes to rise even higher.
Vigarde
The emperor of the Grado Empire. He is beloved for his virtuous ways, including opening up the national treasury to the people in times of disaster. However, ever since that fateful day, his personality has changed completely, and he began the invasion all of the countries across the continent of Magvel...
Syrene
The commander of Frelia’s third unit of pegasus knights. She is Vanessa’s elder sister by blood, but Tana also looks up to her like an elder sister.
Mansel
The Pontifex who rules over the Theocracy of Rausten. Known for being highly educated and devoted to his beliefs, he is worshiped by the deeply devoted people as the representative of the gods.
Riev
A mage general of the Grado Empire known as the “Blood Beryl.” Ever since he learned the reason for the emperor’s change, he has served the emperor to support his dark ambitions.

‘FOLLIES’ TRIVIA
Sidney Guilaroff, Lucille Ball’s hair dresser, who takes responsibility for her famous ‘golden red’ for this movie, becoming her trademark color.
Although they appear in different segments, this is the only feature film collaboration between “I Love Lucy co-stars" Lucille Ball and William Frawley. Coincidently, Frawley's character in this film shares a striking similarity with his iconic character of Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.” In this film he plays a money-hungry curmudgeon of a landlord, much like the show. In the above photo, he appears with director Minnelli and co-star Brice.
The horse ridden by Lucille Ball is the Lone Ranger's Silver!
Lucille Ball was actually fired by Ziegfeld from his road company production of Rio Rita in the 1930s.
In February 1956, Lucy and Desi appeared on “MGM Parade” to promote their MGM film Forever Darling. The show also included footage of Lena Horne singing from Ziegfeld Follies.
Lucy also played a showgirl in pink in “Lucy Gets Into Pictures” (ILL S4;E19) aired on February 21, 1955. The scene was inspired by Ziegfeld’s legendary stage shows featuring beautiful women wearing elaborate costumes navigating long staircases. To solidify the comparison, Ricky says he is going to a meeting with Mr. Minnelli. Vincente Minnelli was one of the directors of Ziegfeld Follies.
Lucy Ricardo had previously cavorted around in a lampshade in the manner of a Ziegfeld girl in both the unaired pilot and “The Audition” (S1;E6).
Ziegfeld Follies includes a sketch for Red Skelton called “When Television Comes” aka “Guzzler’s Gin” in which a (future) television spokesman gets increasingly sloshed on his product. This sketch was an obvious influence on Lucy’s Vitameatavegamin routine in “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aired on May 5, 1952.
Ziegfeld Girl Eve Whitney appeared on “I Love Lucy” episode “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15). She used her own name for the character.
The Telegraph Boy in "A Sweepstakes Ticket" Arthur Walsh - appeared on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (ILL S3;E11) as Arthur ‘King Cat’ Walsh. He teaches Lucy how to jitterbug.
The first Judge in the “Pay the Two Dollars” James Crehan also played the Police Detective on “I Love Lucy in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5) first aired on October 31, 1955.
Porky, a voice on the telephone in “Number Please” Peter Lawford, played “Password” against Lucille Ball on September 24, 1964. At the time, Lawford was married to President Kennedy’s sister, Patricia. On November 26, 1968, Ball was a guest on “The Tonight Show” when Peter Lawford was sitting in for Johnny Carson.
Chorus Boy Bert May appeared as a solo dancer on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy and Tennessee Ernie Ford” (TLS S5;E21) in February 1967.
In the dressing room, Lucy jokes with Fanny Brice, one of the funniest women in showbusiness. This was the only time Ball and Brice collaborated and was Brice’s last film.
Ziegfeld’s follies began on Broadway, so it was appropriate that the show featured past and future Broadway musical stars:
Lucille Ball ~ Wildcat (1960)
Carol Haney ~ The Pajama Game (1954)
Tommy Rall ~ Call Me Madame (1950)
Fanny Brice ~ The Ziegfeld Follies
Marion Bell ~ Brigadoon (1947)
Victor Moore ~ Anything Goes (1934)
There was a lot of material that was not filmed, but written and cast. Some of the original skits would have added “Lucy” performers Mickey Rooney, Ann Sothern, and Van Johnson to the cast.

THE WEST WING #105 [5-17] The Supremes Full transcript Written by Deborah Cahn Directed by Jessica Yu. I do not own this in any way, nor do I get anything from the sharing of it.
(MONDAY)
(CROWD OUTSIDE)
DONNA: (on phone) Tommy at Justice. Covitz at Justice. Citizens For a Strong America. Archbishop Gaudio, Archbishop Rummel…
JOSH: What?!
DONNA: Rummel! Of New York. Man of God.
JOSH: I can't hear a damn... Excuse me please. Thank You. How are these people up so early?
DONNA: It's a Supreme Court seat. They had sign-painting parties the second Justice Brady dropped dead. Council sent a new list, said burn the old list.
JOSH: Listen to this. “They cavalierly sacrificed the unborn innocents and beckon, arms akimbo, the reaper, the horseman and the apocalyptic end. Akimbo is a word you wish got used more. There’s someone out there selling “Who Would Jesus Nominate” t-shirts.
DONNA: They’re in Leo’s. They just started.
(OUTSIDE LEO’S OFFICE)
JOSH: You want this?
DONNA: You don't like it?
JOSH: Not really. Sorry I'm late.
LEO: Dem Leadership is in with the President.
JOSH: They giving us more names?
LEO: I'm sure they are.
TOBY: I need the short list by the end of the week.
LEO: Your schedule. Your schedule. Mine. Keep 'em quick. You got 3 judges an hour.
C.J.: Who has Austin Girelli from Connecticut?
TOBY: Me.
C.J.: ACLU called about him. I don't think it'll be a problem, but ask him about that migrant workers thing he wrote.
JOSH: Why isn't Haskins on here?
LEO: Having an affair with his clerk.
MARGARET: Toby - Dubar on line two.
C.J.: Here’s Bernstein. And this is…
TOBY: [on phone] Senator? Yes, Senator. No we're not having a party over the death of a Supreme Court Justice. Well, not a big party.
JOSH: Evelyn Baker Lang?
LEO: Fourth circuit.
JOSH: Isn't she kind of a lefty?
LEO: Yeah
C.J.: Decoy duck. And don’t do it in your office. Do it someplace where the press can see her.
LEO: We want the left flank sufficiently mollified and the right flank sufficiently panicked so as to inspire a little conciliation on all flanks.
JOSH: Lang should do the trick.
TOBY: Put Fred Canterbury down on some list of people we’ll never consider.
C.J.: Baker Lang's just with Josh?
LEO: You want Toby too?
C.J.: It'll look more like we're taking her seriously.
LEO: Toby, Evelyn Baker Lang will be your 8:45 with Josh. Let's go, people. First one to find me a Supreme Court Justice gets a free corned beef sandwich.
(ROOSEVELT ROOM)
JOSH: Obviously we're impressed with your record.
TOBY: Your work on the 14th Amendment in particular is the stuff dreams are made of.
JOSH: But before anything else, we want to gauge your interest level. This will certainly be a lifestyle...
LANG: We can just chat
JOSH: I'm sorry?
LANG: I hear you really went to bat for Eric Hayden.
JOSH: I wish we could have gotten him confirmed.
TOBY: Judge Lang, if the President were to...
LANG: Is he still teaching?
JOSH: Eric? Yeah. Umm...again, if we...
LANG: A conservative anchor of the court has just died. A young brilliant thinker who brought the right out of the closet and championed a whole conservative revival. You cannot replace Owen Brady with a woman who overturned a parental consent law. You'd be shish-ka-bob'd and set aflame on the south lawn. Two reporters have... three reporters have walked by since we started. I'm window dressing. That's fine. I'm happy to help. But let's just chat about the weather.
(OUT IN THE HALL)
TOBY: Not bad.
JOSH: That's what we're talking about. Maybe we should put her on the short list.
TOBY: Yeah
JOSH: Okay, who's next? (Donna gives them folders)
TOBY: That’s his.
DONNA: This is…
JOSH: That’s a “no”.
ACT ONE
(DONNA’S DESK)
DONNA: Sign, please.
JOSH: You want to move it so I can see?
DONNA: Not really
JOSH: Why are we apologizing to Ashland?
DONNA: We sent him flowers. Condolence flowers.
JOSH: Condolences?
DONNA: For his death.
JOSH: He's alive.
DONNA: That's what he said.
JOSH: We sent flowers to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on the occasion of his death?
DONNA: They were supposed to go to Justice Brady's family.
JOSH: Get protocol on the phone.
DONNA: They didn't actually....
JOSH: We did this?!
DONNA: It was an honest mistake. Ashland's 80, he's knock knock knocking on ....
JOSH: Who put the order in?
RYAN: Hey guys!
JOSH: You sent a funeral bouquet to the family of the living breathing Chief Justice of the Supreme Court?
RYAN: No I sent them to the guy who died , Brady.
JOSH: No, actually you didn't.
RYAN: This is terrible. Umm... I really apologize. You know I am a nightmare with details. It's embarrassing. This stuff just leaks out of my head. We should leave the detail work to Donna. She's got the head for it. I'm more of a big picture kind of guy.
JOSH: She's here because she's invaluable. You're here because your uncle's so powerful I can't fire you. Big Picture.
LISA: Hi. Bad time?
JOSH: I'm on my way out.
LISA: Two minutes.
RYAN: Lisa, right? You work for the Judiciary Committee.
LISA: Staff Director.
RYAN: Ryan Pierce, we met at my office.
JOSH: Excuse us.
LISA: Is he the one who flipped the car in Nice?
JOSH: Yeah.
LISA: When do I see names for Brady's seat?
JOSH: Do you want to let the body cool?
LISA: You’re meeting with Barwald, Girelli, Evelyn Baker Lang.
JOSH: Here we go.
LISA: Whose acid trip is that?
JOSH: Just take a breath.
LISA: The committee’s not going to let the balance of the court hurl wildly to the left. You fill Brady's seat with...
JOSH: It's not Brady's seat.
LISA: It's not your Senate.
JOSH: We're just looking at the field.
LISA: Girelli has a fondness for Vicodin and Evelyn Lang is not an option. Save us all some time.
JOSH: We're some democrats over here. We're not going to nominate a born again elk hunter with a tattoo of the confederate flag on his ass.
LISA: Look at Arthur Lopez or Brad Shelton or Mayra Height. You go with Barwald or Lang and the Senate is going to make the next year of your life a living hell. I tell you this as a person who would be your friend if I was a person who looked for different things in friends.
JOSH: We should do this in more often.
LISA: As often as it takes.
(LEO’S OFFICE)
LEO: [on phone] We don't' hate Asians. No we don't. Justice Wong is more valuable to us where he is. Certainly. Thank you sir. [hangs up] Do a drive-by with Sebastian Cho, Massachusetts Supreme.
TOBY: Yeah. You were looking for me?
LEO: You hear about a congressional delegation to the Middle East?
TOBY: Next month.
LEO: It was Jordan and Egypt. Now they want to add Israel and do a day in the territories and meet with this shadow negotiation crew. State's iffy.
TOBY: As they should be. The Prime Minister is going to go through the roof.
LEO: Not to mention the Palestinian authority.
TOBY: I'll look into it.
LEO: Andy's leading the delegation. Is that going to be a...
TOBY: No. I'm on it.
JOSH: President's on his way. What's up?
TOBY: We hate Asians.
JOSH: Okay.
(OUTSIDE OVAL OFFICE)
DEBBIE: Ah Rina, how goes it?
RINA: These are today's. And Mr. Ziegler says that the President would want this before their 1:00.
DEBBIE: Oh here, you can put it in his hot little hands yourself.
RINA: Ah, this is for you, sir.
BARTLET: Thank you Lana.
RINA: Uh, thank you sir. (to Debbie) It…
DEBBIE: I hate to do this, but it's Rina, sir.
BARTLET: What?
DEBBIE: The girl in the dress with the flowers.
BARTLET: Just now?
DEBBIE: Yes.
BARTLET: What'd I call her?
DEBBIE: Lana.
BARTLET: Who's Lana?
DEBBIE: I'm guessing an exotic dancer from your spotty youth.
BARTLET: I should apologize. Get her back.
DEBBIE: You asked me yesterday how the schedule gets off the rails.
BARTLET: Yeah.
DEBBIE: This is how.
LEO: Good afternoon, Mr. President.
BARTLET: Hey, we make any friends?
JOSH: Maybe Zimmerly, Shelton.
TOBY: Mehldau.
JOSH: Lang was pretty impressive.
BARTLET: The gal from the 4th? Didn't she strike down some stuff?
JOSH: Parental consent for abortion.
BARTLET: Yeah, that's not going to happen.
LEO: She was a red flag to the bull.
JOSH: Well, it's working. Lisa Wolfe from the judiciary committee showed up today spewing all kinds of threats and admonitions.
LEO: About what?
TOBY: Three dems on the committee called, elated we were considering bold choices.
LEO: If the strategy's working, let's get her in again.
BARTLET: You like Shelton?
JOSH: Yeah. Moderate, insightful, gets it.
BARTLET: Let's meet him. Who else?
JOSH: Helen Waller. Beresford Bannett DC Circuit. Ellis Yaffe. Martha Zell. Uh.. Howard Kagen out of New York.
(TUESDAY)
(C.J.’S OFFICE)
TOBY: What are you doing?
C.J.: Nothing.
TOBY: What?
CAROL: She has a date.
C.J.: And she's getting fired.
TOBY: Evelyn Lang’s coming back in for another red herring performance, 3:00. You don't find that annoying?
C.J.: I'll have Carol march the Times by Lang at three.
TOBY: Brad Shelton's in with the President.
C.J.: We like him.
TOBY: Yeah, we do.
(OVAL OFFICE)
BARTLET: E. Bradford Shelton. What's the E for?
SHELTON: Elijah.
BARTLET: That's a burden.
SHELTON: Hence the E.
BARTLET: I hear good things about you from my staff. What did they miss?
SHELTON: My son burned you in effigy.
BARTLET: Did you watch?
SHELTON: I didn't. It was a campus demonstration against American presence in Saudi Arabia. There's a photo in his yearbook. Someone'll dig it up. I thought it would sound better in person than on paper.
BARTLET: I'm not sure it did. Did he burn anybody else?
SHELTON: No, just you.
(HALLWAY)
LANG: Well, I’ve missed you both.
JOSH: We appreciate this.
LANG: I keep running into Brad Shelton in the parking lot. Some say coincidence. I'm not so sure.
JOSH: You have been very patient.
LANG: Well I don't mind. But people wonder why the appellate system is so backed up. We shouldn't let them know this is how I spend my time.
TOBY: Well, if you were less appealing.
LANG: Same to you sir.
(OVAL OFFICE)
BARTLET: Affirmative action is going to be back in the next few years. Let's start there.
SHELTON: What do I know about it?
BARTLET: What do you think about it?
SHELTON: I don't know. Not the answer you were looking for?
BARTLET: Not really.
SHELTON: Unnerving isn't it?
BARTLET: Is there another topic you'd be more comfortable with?
SHELTON: Nothing comes to mind.
BARTLET: Perhaps you should make something up.
SHELTON: I'm not trying to be cagey, but I don't position myself on issues and I don't know what I think about a case until I hear it. There are moderates who are called that because they are not activists. And there are moderates who are called that because sometimes they wind up on the left and sometimes on the right.
BARTLET: You think I want someone who’s gonna vote with Ashland?
SHELTON: I think you are looking for somebody who will vote with him now and replace him later.
BARTLET: And that's not you?
SHELTON: Wish it were. He's a giant. But my allegiance to the eccentricities of a case will reliably outweigh my allegiance to any position you might wish I held.
(ROOSEVELT ROOM)
JOSH: Let's talk a little bit about what the judiciary committee's concerns would be. We can safely say reproductive rights are gonna come up.
TOBY: They're going to say judicial activism, particularly in drori. How would you address that?
LANG: And you're who?
TOBY: I'm sorry?
LANG: Who are you? We're playing committee.
JOSH: This will be coming from one of the 11 Republicans on there. Mitchell -
LANG: You can only be one.
JOSH: We don't need to -
LANG: If you're Webster, the question is 'Where do you stand on Roe v Wade?'. And the answer is 'Judicial ruling shouldn't be based on personal ideology, mine or anyone else's'. If you're Davies, the question is 'How would you approach a D&X case?' because he's the drum banger on partial birth. And the answer is 'I don't comment on hypotheticals'. If you're Malkin, you're from Virginia, so you ask about my decision in drori. I take you point by point from the doctor to the father to Casey to undue burden to equal protection back to Roe at which point you can't remember the question and I drink my water for a minute while you regroup.
JOSH: Will you excuse us for a second?
(OUT IN THE HALL)
JOSH: I love her. I love her mind. I love her shoes.
TOBY: We march her to five senator's offices and they'll be so scared they'll beg us to put Shelton on the court.
(ROOSEVELT ROOM)
JOSH: Sorry. You were vetted by the FBI when you hit the Federal bench, but if we re-opened an investigation....
LANG: I'm a shill, right? Why would you bother with a background check?
JOSH: Humor us.
TOBY: If there's anything that they didn't find...
LANG: Let's see, umm... in high school I snuck a copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover out of the public library and never returned it. In college I got a marijuana plant from my roommate as a birthday present. And in year two of law school I had an abortion. Can I get some water while you regroup?
ACT TWO
JOSH: Okay. Okay.
LANG: I tell you this so you'd be prepared. It might not come up, but if it did, I wouldn't comment.
JOSH: But if they know, it'll be hard.
LANG: Roe v Wade affords me the right to terminate a pregnancy and to do so, free from all restraint or interference of others.
JOSH: A hearing room....
LANG: I'm told I have a right to privacy. I think this would be the sort of thing it's referring to. I also bet like a drunken sailor during my bi-monthly games of Hearts. Do you wanna talk about that?
(C.J.’S OFFICE)
C.J.: An abortion?
TOBY: Of all the gin joints in all the world....
JOSH: Maybe they won't find it.
TOBY: Oh, they'll find it.
JOSH: Yeah, but who's going to bring it up? The committee, they'd look like monsters.
C.J.: They don't have to. Someone leaks it to the tabloid press, it's a feeding frenzy in 12 hours.
JOSH: She says she can handle it.
C.J.: Oh, okay.
TOBY: Well, we need her. She's the cautionary tale. Without her, we may not get Shelton.
C.J.: You been outside today? We don't hand someone to the madding crowd so they can take the heat off some guy from Indiana.
JOSH: The woman is - you should hear her.
C.J.: What? So she IS a serious candidate?
JOSH: She should be.
C.J.: She's going to be on posters under a headline that says 'Wanted for the murder of 15 million American children'.
JOSH: Let's think about this.
C.J.: Let it go.
JOSH: No. Really, nominees live or die by Roe v Wade. We're playing along with the ridiculous notion that the Supreme Court is a single issue body in a way it hasn't been since, I don't know what...
TOBY: Slavery.
JOSH: Exactly. So she had an abortion. Who the hell are we?
C.J.: You think I like this? You keep this up, somone's going to take this to the press and this bright woman's going to be a checkout counter spectacle. Get her out of the building.
(WEDNESDAY)
(OVAL OFFICE)
BARTLET: Brad Shelton could work for us. I like him.
LEO: So talk to him this afternoon. He's going to start getting calls.
BARTLET: Who else?
TOBY: Wisnewski’s a good maybe. The majority leader’s really pushing him. And Barkham from the 5th, though he has a question.
JOSH: It's a tax thing. We're looking into it.
BARTLET: You still having a love affair with Evelyn Lang?
JOSH: No. Uh, Robert Brant.
BARTLET: How come?
JOSH: She won't make through vetting.
BARTLET: Why not?
TOBY: She had an abortion.
JOSH: Robert Brandt’s on the 9th circuit state. Stan Yancy's worked with him and says he's always kept his cards -
BARTLET: When did she have an abortion?
JOSH: Law school.
BARTLET: Before or -
C.J.: After '73, it was legal.
BARTLET: We discarding anybody else for legal activities?
TOBY: Not yet.
BARTLET: Tonsillectomy? We down on surfing this year?
C.J.: She'd be publicly eviscerated.
BARTLET: 27 million women voted for me. I think they might had in mind that I was going to protect this particular right.
JOSH: We have plenty –
BARTLET: “I like that guy from Florida with the good hairdo, but I want to retain my right to choose, so I'm voting for what's-his-name, married to Abbey Bartlet.”
TOBY: Sir. They're going to make this about her objectivity.
BARTLET: We promised the committee a short list by Friday. I want her name on it.
LEO: Okay.
STAFF: Thank you, Mr. President. (EXEUNT)
BARTLET: That pisses me off.
LEO: Apparently.
BARTLET: We marched her around here all week. The honor of a place on the short list is the least we could do.
LEO: We’re still going with Brad Shelton? BARTLET: (nods)
(DONNA’S CUBICLE)
RYAN: Filling a seat on the Supremes…heady stuff.
DONNA: Don't call them that.
RYAN: My uncle calls them that. So does the minority leader. So does Henry Clark. You know him? He's on the court.
DONNA: You drop one more name and I'm going to staple your mouth shut.
RYAN: (chuckles)
JOSH: There’ll be hell to pay at Agincourt. I've offended the dauphin.
DONNA: Lisa Wolfe called twice. Senator Webster called regarding E. Lang. “What can you possibly be thinking?” Senator Milbank, regarding Lang. “NO NO NO NO NO.” Bertha McNull, “Not a snow ball's chance in...” oh, that's not about Lang. That's about the highways bill.
JOSH: I need a drink.
DONNA: Sun’s not over the yardarm.
JOSH: C.J.'s right.
DONNA: Usually. You want a Black Eyed Susan?
JOSH: Is that a drink?
DONNA: It's a cookie. My mom sent them.
JOSH: No -- Yes.
DONNA: Peanut butter with a chocolate kiss.
JOSH: They’re cat people? [holding up cookie tin]
DONNA: No they're not.
JOSH: These theirs?
DONNA: Shadrach and Meschach.
JOSH: Two cats, they’re cat people.
DONNA: For years they only had one, but he died over Christmas.
JOSH: This is a dry cookie.
DONNA: After what was deemed an appropriate mourning period, they went to get a new one. And my mother liked the abyssinian and my father liked the gray. And they claim that after 39 years of marriage, they’ve outgrown compromise, so they got both. It doesn't make them cat people. The house doesn't smell. Do I have crumbs?
(TOBY’S OFFICE)
JOSH: They pick one. They pick one! That's how we get Evie Lang. And not as a decoy. We put her on the court.
TOBY: Hi.
JOSH: The Chief Justice says he wouldn't step down because the President wouldn't be able to fill his seat with another liberal lion. She's the liberal lion. Ashland resigns, she takes his seat, okay? And we offer the Republican Senate Judiciary Committee the opportunity to hand-pick a conservative for Brady's seat. We put 'em both up.
TOBY: I’m ordering mu-shu. You want some?
JOSH: Listen to me.
TOBY: No.
JOSH: I'm serious.
TOBY: And then we got what, after we hand the Republicans a seat on the Supreme Court with a red bow on top?
JOSH: We have a balanced court. They can't let Brady's seat go to a liberal. So let them keep it. Meanwhile, we name the first female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the nation's history. I'm taking it to the President.
TOBY: No you're not. Do not go in there.
(HALLWAY)
JOSH: Trip him.
TOBY: Ashland is 82. We may have an opportunity to put two people on this bench. That's two seats we fill with Democrats.
JOSH: Moderates.
TOBY: What do you care how moderate they are? Two is twice as many as one.
(OUTSIDE OVAL OFFICE)
JOSH: Can I get in there?
DEBBIE: No, just a minute.
TOBY: We don't need him.
JOSH: Not moderate, mediocre.
TOBY: What, Shelton’s not bright enough for you?
JOSH: I want more than bright. If we had a bench full of moderates in ’54, 'Separate but Equal' would still be on the books, and this place would still have two sets of drinking fountains.
TOBY: Moderate means temperate. It means responsible. It means thoughtful.
JOSH: It means cautious. It means unimaginative.
TOBY: It means being more concerned about making decisions than making history.
DEBBIE: Indoor voices please.
JOSH: Is that really the biggest tragedy in the world? That we nominated somebody who made an impression instead of some second rate crowd pleaser?
TOBY: The ability to see tow sides of an argument is not the hallmark of an inferior intellect.
DEBBIE: Toby!
JOSH: What about the vast arenas of debate a moderate won't even address? A mind like Lang's?
DEBBIE: Josh!
JOSH: Let them pick a conservative with a mind like like Justice Brady had.
DEBBIE: Josh!
JOSH: You can hate his positions, but he was a visionary. He blew the whole thing open. He changed the whole argument.
DEBBIE: (sprays water in Josh’s face) The President will see you now.
BARTLET: And you?
TOBY: I think they're going to pick a young, spry, conservative ideologue who's going to camp out in that seat for 45 years.
JOSH: Fine. Two voices are articulating the debate at either end of the spectrum.
BARTLET: Filling another seat on the court may be the only lasting thing I do in this office. Shelton's a great choice. He'll make us proud. And if Ashland resigns in a year, we’ve got a stack of great options. We can't give it away.
JOSH: Mr. President, the first woman in that chair.
TOBY: We go out on some limb here and alienate the Senate, they'll tread water for three years, and we get nobody. The next guy gets to fill Brady's seat.
BARTLET: Take it to Ashland. See what he says.
TOBY: How’d you come up with it?
JOSH: What?
TOBY: The swap-a-dee-doo.
JOSH: There was.... Donna's mom... I thought it up in the shower.
(JUSTICE ASHLAND’S OFFICE)
ASHLAND: Who let them in?
TOBY: Sorry to disturb you, sir.
ASHLAND: Carrier pigeons. Oh -- your flowers. Yeah, we like them.
JOSH: I'm dreadfully sorry about that, sir.
ASHLAND: Oh for God's sake, let us sit upon the ground and tell sad stories of the death of kings. Brady was your age. Eat your greens.
TOBY: He was a great man.
ASHLAND: He was a selfish bastard.
JOSH: You told the President you hope to be replaced by a liberal with the same level conviction that you brought to the chair.
ASHLAND: That sounds like something I'd say.
TOBY: Sir, are you familiar with Evelyn Baker Lang?
ASHLAND: Miss Lang. You've met with her?
JOSH: Yes sir.
ASHLAND: How are you going to get her past the pit bulls? They're not going to like the notion of Miss Lang in Owen Brady's seat.
JOSH: For your seat, if - if - you were to resign, she'd be Chief.
ASHLAND: My seat? What about Brady's?
TOBY: We'd allow the Judiciary Committee to choose someone. A conservative.
JOSH: Would you consider stepping down under those circumstances?
ASHLAND: Sure.
JOSH: We think it might be a viable option.
ASHLAND: Go ahead, see who they pick of their favorite sons. See what segregationist, anti-miscegenationist, Isaiah-quoting, gay-bashing bastard they come up with. Jed Bartlet from New Hampshire had an idea. Uh-oh.
ACT THREE
(THURSDAY, LISA WOLFE’S OFFICE)
LISA: No, I cut this because what he's implying is illegal. Take it back out. [to Josh] Three times in one week. In some cultures we'd be married.
JOSH: Chilling.
LISA: Is it Shelton?
JOSH: He's the front runner.
LISA: Good, are we done?
JOSH: Mind if I shut the door?
LISA: No.
JOSH: How are you doing?
LISA: Ah, super!
JOSH: Feeling good?
LISA: I got a meeting in 4 minutes.
JOSH: I'm going to float an idea here that even I can't believe I'm mentioning and my colleagues definitely can't believe I'm mentioning, and the President would probably prefer I drop completely and if I find it in the Washington Post tomorrow morning, I'll march straight out to the Press Room and tell them the idea came from you. It'll embarrass the crap out of your boss and you'll be on Hotjobs by nightfall.
[THE WHITE HOUSE. TOBY’S OFFICE]
TOBY: There's someone in my office.
RINA: I thought it was your ex-wife.
TOBY: You didn’t want to warn me about that?
RINA: You asked her to come in.
ANDREA: She's cute.
TOBY: Late some night, our eyes’ll meet over the maritime commission report. We'll be at the Justice of the Peace before dawn. You want to talk about this dog and pony show you're attending in Gaza?
ANDREA: Not really. Bradford Shelton.
TOBY: He's on the list. You're not going to Gaza.
ANDREA: I still don't want to talk about it.
TOBY: You're not attending peace talks with a bunch of Israelis and Palestinians who don't work for the Israeli or Palestinian governments.
ANDREA: They may generate some useful ideas.
TOBY: The ideas already exist. The problem is getting the recognized parties to stick to the plan.
ANDREA: So we sit with our hands folded?
TOBY: We asked them for democracy. We should maintain some scrap of respect for the guys who are democratically elected.
ANDREA: If you're really interested in peace, you negotiate with anyone. You negotiate with the mailman.
TOBY: Thanks for tee-ing that up. The mailman can't deliver.
ANDREA: We'll see.
TOBY: No, we won't see. You're jeopardizing this country's relationship with the Likud party and with the Palestinian authority, and it is not an option.
ANDREA: Is that all you've got? There’s no “and what about the kids?”
TOBY: Did something happen?
ANDREA: I'm going away for two weeks.
TOBY: Will they be...?
ANDREA: At my mothers...
TOBY: Good.
ANDREA: Would you have asked?
TOBY: I figured your mother’s, which is apparently....
ANDREA: You say you want to be involved. It doesn't come with an embossed invitation. You involve yourself or you don't.
TOBY: The President would like to remind you that this is a fact-finding mission. Please make it clear to any parties that you meet with that you are not empowered to negotiate for the United States.
[OUTSIDE C.J.’S OFFICE]
JOSH: Is she in there?
CAROL: Hang on. She's getting off.... [C.J. laughs loudly through the door] the phone.... [into speaker phone] you want Josh?
C.J.: Lord knows I do! Josh Lyman as I live and breathe! You want a cookie? They're from Donna's mother.
JOSH: I spoke to Lisa Wolfe.
C.J.: What did she say?
JOSH: I don't want to talk about it. I'm hiding from Toby.
C.J.: [giggles] Nothing. You're hiding. It's funny.
JOSH: It's not funny.
TOBY: Hey
C.J.: [laughs] see? It is.
JOSH: I gotta go.
TOBY: What's going on?
JOSH: C.J. has the giggles.
C.J.: It's your deal. I find it elating.
TOBY: She stoned?
C.J.: I'm fine. I just didn't get enough sleep.
JOSH: You were with Ranger Rick weren't you?
C.J.: Josh spoke to Lisa Wolfe.
TOBY: She give you a name?
JOSH: You are a faithless wench.
TOBY: What's the name?
JOSH: Christopher Mulready. Wait for it....
TOBY: Christopher MULREADY????!!!!
JOSH: There it is.
C.J.: He’s not the....
TOBY: American's Democrats - The triumphant of Socialism.
JOSH: He doesn't like the name.
TOBY: The man wrote a book that flushes the entire doctrine of un-enumerated rights down the -
C.J.: Toilet.
TOBY: …garbage disposal. No right to use a condom. No right to get an abortion, certainly. No protection from electronic searches. No substantive due process.
C.J.: He's what, 48?
JOSH: I know.
C.J.: The left's going to blow a gasket!
TOBY: No separation of church and state.
JOSH: We got problems on the right too. Kogan, Howard, Tondello. They can't vote for a Mulready. Their constituencies are too moderate.
TOBY: Get another name.
JOSH: That is the name.
TOBY: There are other....
JOSH: This is the deal. He's what Evelyn Lang is to them. We nominate the patron saint of a woman's right to choose for Chief Justice. We ask them to ignore an incredibly rich piece of her personal history. We take the name they give us.
TOBY: This isn't going to work.
JOSH: Yeah.
TOBY: It isn't.
[JOSH'S OFFICE]
TOBY: If --- if we were going to try this, what would be the plan?
JOSH: We give the President and Leo the name. We bring Christopher Mulready in. We bring Lang back in, hopefully the two of them woo the pants off the President. And he agrees to the deal without noticing he's standing in the gaze of history, pantless.
TOBY: I'll talk to him.
JOSH: You don't have to talk to him.
TOBY: You have been on about this. It sounds more plausible coming from me. What are you gonna do about the committee?
JOSH: Lisa Wolfe’s gonna take it to the Chairman.
TOBY: I mean the Democrats. I need to get Senator Pierce on board or you get nobody. What are you going to do about Pierce?
RYAN: (singing)'Won't you stay... just a little big longer... '
DONNA: Stop.
TOBY: I thought you were firing him?
JOSH: If wishing made it so. Donna! Send in Elvis.
RYAN: What's up?
JOSH: Come on in, take a load off. I was a little, ah, brusque with you before. I'm sorry about that.
RYAN: Okay.
JOSH Your feelings a little hurt?
RYAN: Not at all
JOSH: Really? Why not?
RYAN: Would this be easier if they were?
JOSH: I said I was going to fire you if it wasn't for....
RYAN: Are you? Firing me?
JOSH: No.
RYAN: Then there's a “sticks and stones” thing that comes to mind.
[OUTSIDE OVAL OFFICE]
TOBY: Finishing a call. I spoke to Andy.
LEO: Anything?
TOBY: No. The National Security Caucus is sponsoring the delegation. We could talk to them.
LEO: We'll deal with it next week. Don't worry about it.
TOBY: We got a name for Brady's seat.
LEO: Somebody workable?
DEBBIE: You can go in now.
LEO: Thank you.
(OVAL OFFICE)
BARTLET: MULREADY!
TOBY: That's the name.
BARTLET: No! Are you out of your bloody mind?
TOBY: Let's sit down and talk about this.
BARTLET: The last time I heard Christopher Mulready's name it was in conjunction with a treatise over the rights of incorporation, and some sort of baloney about the stranglehold the EPA has placed on the endangered species list…
ACT FOUR
(THURSDAY)
[DONNA’S CUBICLE]
JOSH: Ryan in here yet?
DONNA: Not yet.
CHARLIE: Chris Mulready?
JOSH: Yeah
CHARLIE: Dissented on minority set asides. Struck down hate crime legislation. Went after miranda rights. Feeling pretty good about that?
JOSH: It's not a perfect plan. I'm the first to admit.
CHARLIE: The President wants to reiterate, he’s not spending more than five minutes with this clown.
C.J.: The press room is clear. Carol is going to babysit the filing shop. But keep an eye out for roving reporters.
CHARLIE: You're in on this too?
JOSH: We got Lang coming in to meet the President at 7. Christopher Mulready is at 8. The press can't see him. We need a clear shot from the Roosevelt room to the Oval.
DONNA: He's on the short list?
JOSH: He is if she is. We may get both.
DONNA: Oh my god. You're putting my mother's cats on the Supreme Court.
C.J.: You're what?
JOSH: It's just an experiment. She’s on sentry. We’re good.
TOBY: Hi.
JOSH: Don't ever tell anyone that story.
TOBY: We all settled?
C.J.: Lefty’s got the goods. Rocko got the call. Stinky's on lookout.
DONNA Hey!
RYAN: Shall we?
JOSH: Your uncle’s here?
C.J.: Knock 'em dead. Pierce’ll never buy it, will he?
TOBY: Nope.
RYAN: Remember, he's all bark. Just let him holler and wear himself out. He's got the strength. You've got the endurance. Here. [hands over bottle of scotch]. Use it wisely and for God's sake, don't try to keep up. You're way out of your league.
JOSH: Not necessary. Thank you.
(MURAL ROOM)
SENATOR PIERCE: Good to see you, Josh.
JOSH: Senator Pierce, thank you so much for stopping in.
RYAN: Josh was pretty impressed with your floor speech on Tuesday.
PIERCE: Josh can kiss up all on his own. Get back to work.
RYAN: Yell if you need anything.
PIERCE: My nephew behaving?
JOSH: He's a… treat.
PIERCE: Well, he better be. Bugged me for two years to get him a job in this place.
JOSH: Really?
PIERCE: Watch yourself, he's a lean and hungry type. Have someone taste your food.
JOSH: Ryan?
PIERCE: So! Craziest rumor you ever heard running around the committee.
JOSH: Oh, yeah?
PIERCE: Charlie Felson says you want to put Chris Mulready on the Supreme Court. I said anybody who tries is going to find himself in a closed session with myself, the minority leader, and the business end of a two-by-four.
JOSH: You know, we got a 21year old Glenlivet knocking around here. Can I get you a drink?
[DEBBIE'S OFFICE]
C.J.: Lang still in there?
DEBBIE: Oh, she's a big hit.
C.J.: She has to leave. Her evil twin Skippy is on his way.
DEBBIE: I did our secret wrap-it-up sign, which is, I knock and say 'The deputy NSA needs to talk about Japan' and he said 'you talk to him, you've been there' which is true. But it makes me think he's forgotten it's a secret sign.
C.J.: How about "Excuse me Mr. President we need to move on"?
DEBBIE: If you want the job, you're going to have to work on your typing.
[ROOSEVELT ROOM]
TOBY: Apologies. He's running behind schedule.
MULREADY: I imagine that happens. You want to tell me what I'm doing here?
TOBY: Oh, just a hello.
MULREADY: I'm not being impeached?
TOBY: No.
MULREADY: This isn’t a not-particularly-subtle form of intimidation about the gays in the workplace case?
TOBY: That would be illegal.
MULREADY: My point exactly.
TOBY: The President will explain....any minute now.
MULREADY: Hm.
TOBY: But since you mention it, I read your article on Bellington, and I may be out on the fringe here, but I - I don't see how a family values conservative justifies denying committed couples access to the benefits of state sanctioned monogamy.
MULREADY: Homosexual couples.
TOBY: Couples. A couple is a couple.
[C.J.'S OFFICE]
JOSH: Hi.
C.J.: How was Ryan's uncle?
JOSH: He's a blast. Come meet him.
C.J.: He's still here? Oh my God! You're drunk!
JOSH: I think I just promised him a pork barrel roads project on an omnibus bill that doesn't exist. Don't try and keep up. He's got a wooden – a hollow leg. He drinks a lot.
[ROOSEVELT ROOM]
TOBY: It's an equal protection violation.
MULREADY: Homosexuals are not a suspect class.
TOBY: D.O.M.A. denies access.
MULREADY: No.
TOBY: To over 1,000 federal protections.
MULREADY: To what?
TOBY: Survivor benefits under Social Security.
MULREADY: $255.00? I'll write you a check.
TOBY: Hospital decision making.
MULREADY: So talk about power of attorney, not marriage. Besides, the fact that D.O.M.A. doesn't restrict access to marriage.
TOBY: Of course it restricts access. It restricts full faith and credit.
MULREADY: So, Vermont gets to steer nationwide marriage legislation? Vermont?
LANG: Well, this is a sight to see! One of the more unlikely meetings in the history of the Bartlet White House.
MULREADY: It's good to see you, Evie.
LANG: You too, Chris. I came to say goodbye. I wish I had a camera.
MULREADY: Mr. Ziegler was trying to convince me that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional.
LANG: Oh, D.O.M.A.? He was trying to convince you?
TOBY: What?
LANG: He doesn't need convincing.
TOBY: I wasn't doing it because...
LANG: He was yanking your chain. He would never uphold D.O.M.A. He may not love the idea of gay marriage, but he hates congressional overreaching, and Congress doesn't have the power to legislate marriage. The issue isn't privacy.
MULREADY: Or equal protection.
LANG: It's enumerated powers. He'll have an easier time knocking down D.O.M.A. than I will.
MULREADY: Lack of imagination on your part, if I may be so bold.
TOBY: You were yanking my chain?
MULREADY: You called me in for a meeting with a Democratic president in the middle of the night. Are you really going to give me crap about yanking your chain?
LANG: Josh Lyman is gesticulating wildly.
TOBY: Excuse me.
[HALLWAY]
TOBY: Where's the Senator?
JOSH: He's in with C.J.. He got me a little drunk.
TOBY: Is he leaving?
JOSH: I think he's getting C.J. a little drunk. How's it going?
TOBY: He's striking down gay marriage bans and she's defending him and they're as thick as thieves and he's a fan of chain yanking.
JOSH: She's defending him?
TOBY: Down is down, down is up.
LANG: I am not... no I am not rewriting Article 1. What I am saying is that a gun free school zone...
MULREADY: Is not a federal issue. In Lopez…
LANG: Lopez overturned 50 years of precedent.
MULREADY: Too bad, they ruled a plain text reading of the commerce clause, does not afford Congress...
LANG: A plain text reading of the Constitution values a “negro” at three-fifths of a man.
MULREADY: Hence the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments.
LANG: Oh, generous. Thank you.
MULREADY: The relationship between guns and schools and interstate commerce is... is...
LANG: You don't think that the quality of education has a direct affect on the economic...
[DEBBIE'S OFFICE]
TOBY: Is he?
DEBBIE: Waiting to meet a man you're holding hostage in the Roosevelt room.
(MURAL ROOM)
C.J. AND PIERCE: Oh and while the king was looking down, the jester stole his thorny crown, the courtroom was adjourned, no verdict was returned…
JOSH: Ok... ok.... Everyone needs to put down their glasses and pay attention.
[OVAL OFFICE]
BARTLET: You like him.
TOBY: I hate him. I hate him, but he's brilliant. And the two of the them together, they’re fighting like cats and dogs, but it works.
[MURAL ROOM]
PIERCE: You couldn't find a single warm-blooded centrist to put on the court?
JOSH: We've got centrists. We've got six of them plus two staunch conservatives plus Justice Ashland. The one clarion voice articulating a liberal vision. He's going to go and then what?
[OVAL OFFICE]
BARTLET: Well, send him in....
TOBY: Sir…
BARTLET: I said I'll listen to him, Toby. That's going to have to do it.
[HALLWAY]
DONNA: Toby.
TOBY: What?
DONNA: Nothing's happening.
TOBY: Hang on.
DONNA: That's him?
TOBY: Yeah.
DONNA: No tail. No cloven hooves.
[OVAL OFFICE]
DEBBIE: Judge Mulready.
BARTLET: Thanks for coming in.
MULREADY: It's an honor sir.
BARTLET: Please. I understand that you and Judge Lang had a bit of a knock-down-drag-out.
MULREADY: She wants to federalize law enforcement.
BARTLET: Yeah.
MULREADY: I thought it was hasty.
BARTLET: Not your brand of judge?
MULREADY: Quite the opposite. I haven't had that much fun in months.
BARTLET: Really?
MULREADY: Use her, if you can. I'm not sure what all this is about. I suppose a number of people are placated by a glimpse of someone like her or someone like me in these halls. I'm most certainly here for that. But if there’s anyway that you can use her…
BARTLET: It's unlikely.
MULREADY: Who's at the top of the list? ... If I leaked it, would they believe me?
BARTLET: Brad Shelton.
MULREADY: Really?
BARTLET: You don't like him?
MULREADY: He's a fine jurist. And in the event that Carmine, Lafayette, Hoyt, Clarke and Brannaghan all drop dead, the center will still be well tended.
BARTLET: You want another Brady?
MULREADY: Sure, just like you'd like another Ashland - who wouldn't? The court was at its best when Brady was fighting Ashland.
BARTLET: Plenty of good law written by the voices of moderation.
MULREADY: Who writes the extraordinary dissent? The one man minority opinion whose time hasn't come, but 20 years later some circuit court clerk digs it up at three in the morning. Brennan railing against censorship. Harlan's Jeremiad on Jim Crowe.
BARTLET: Maybe you, some day?
MULREADY: They can't put me on the court, just like you can't put Evelyn Lang on the court. It's Sheltons from here on in.
BARTLET: There are 4,000 protestors outside this building worried about who's going to land in that seat. We can't afford to alienate all of them. MULREADY: We all have our roles to play sir. Yours is to nominate someone who doesn't alienate people.
(FRIDAY)
(PRESS ROOM)
JOSH: Where's Toby?
C.J.: Can you see this? [pointing to spot on her blouse]
JOSH: Yeah.
C.J.: It's water, it'll dry.
JOSH: Okay.
TOBY: Ready?
[on the TV in background...]
REPORTER ... have gathered around..... Ashland having served 32 years on the United States Supreme Court, 12 of them as Chief will officially announce his retirement in just a moment.
ASHLAND: (at podium, on TV) Henry Staub retired, and I received a phone call, you were probably learning to walk. It's been an honor to pause in Henry Staub's chair, a joy to spend...
C.J.: (to Bartlet) He’ll take three questions at the most, and then we’re off .
LANG:[to Lang] you ready? [Lang is engrossed in Ashland's announcement] [To C.J.] That's a yes.
MULREADY: So, why a racial preference and not an economic one?
CHARLIE: Because affirmative action’s about a legacy of racial oppression.
MULREADY: It’s about compromising admissions standards.
CHARLIE: That's bull….excuse me. It's about leveling the playing field after 300 years of…
MULREADY: See, this is where the liberal argument goes off the rails. You get stuck in the past. Now you wanna comeback at me with grading is based on past performance, but admission should be based on potential on how a candidate may thrive with this sort of opportunity. And studies show that affirmative action admits have a higher predisposition to contribute to society.
CHARLIE: Hang on, I gotta write this down.
BARTLET: Ah-ah-ah. Hand it over. [to Evelyn] Toby has a daughter, Molly, 10 months old. She's a looker and very bright. And someday he'd like to give her this copy of the 14th Amendment signed by the first woman to ever hold this job.
LANG: Have you got a...
TOBY: Oh... [hands her a pen] Would you mind adding that title?
LANG: That's a bit premature, isn't it?
BARTLET: No.
TOBY: Thank you.
C.J.: Mr. President.
BARTLET: Shall we? [at the podium]
C.J.: Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States.
BARTLET: The honorable Christopher Mulready, nominee for Associate Justice - United States Supreme Court. The honorable Evelyn Baker Lang, nominee for Chief Justice - United States Supreme Court. I look forward to taking your questions.
THE END

Pure Feeling Playlist
Okay, so I had someone on twitter express interest in the songs I have for my playlist for Pure Feeling and figured, yeah, I could share it. I don’t have a spotify (I don’t like the interface plus the music selection is way too limited for my taste) and the playlist itself is on Youtube Music. It’s also private because I don’t really want random people seeing it or other people messing with it if I unlocked it, so I’ll just type up all the songs here with links that way y’all can scroll through and listen to what you want.
I understand there’s probably an easier and faster way to do this probably, but hey, with the quarantine I clearly have some extra time on my hands so why not?
Though, couple of warnings:
1. It’s LOOOOOOONG (it’s 300+ songs in total) (don’t worry I’m gonna put this under a cut)
2. Some of the songs aren’t going to make much sense in terms of the AU. This is for two reasons: a) Some of the songs allude to events/characters that haven’t shown up in the story yet (there’s a LOT of songs regarding Mara’s father) and b) some of them are just general songs that I use to get a basis of emotion/vibe when writing particular types of scenes.
3. My music tastes are all over the place (and this doesn’t even include some of the other genres I listen to just because it doesn’t fit this AU lol)
But this playlist is my main muse and is probably one of the best insights to my process/inner thoughts so, without further ado.....my full playlist.
(I grouped the songs from the same artist together for the easiest convenience)
(And some songs might kind of be repeats if I listen to multiple versions for the purpose of this fic)
Got any favorites? Any songs that worry you about the future of this fic? Or just something you might want more clarification on? Feel free to shoot me ask about it!

was that ( LILY JAMES ) I just saw around the Flower Garden Gated Community? No, it was just ( HAYDEN MADDOX ), the ( THIRTY YEAR OLD ) ( CISFEMALE ) ( EXOTIC DANCER ). ( SHE/HER ) has/have been living in Boston for ( TEN YEARS ). One thing about them that they wouldn’t want you to know about them is ( TW DEATH: HER TWIN SISTER DIED AND SHE TOOK HER IDENTITY. ). ( HAYDEN ) can be described as ( ECLETIC & FORGIVING ) as well as ( SECRETIVE & NARCISSISTIC ) and If you ask them, ( FALLINGWATER BY MAGGIE ROGERS ) would be their anthem.
hiii i’m liv, here’s another one of my “i made this up in the moment” bios! enjoy! and pls plot w me!
tw: death, arson, identity theft... the works
BIO
she was born lucy maddox into a pretty normal, middle class family but she had a twin (hayden maddox)
it wasn’t the case where the twins were inseparable or one overshadowed the other, they just weren’t very close because they wanted to be their own people since birth
their mom was a stay at home mom and their dad was a lawyer of some sort
when they were in hs their dad started to get clients who insisted they could bring him to the next level, which would mean that he’d make more than twice what he was already making so he took the opportunity without consulting his family
their mother was upset but she was a stay at home mom and she didn’t want to keep the girls from getting everything they could ever want
her twin sister sided with her dad which really didn’t help the whole... twins not getting along that well in the first place
so they were planning to move to connecticut but a week or so before they were supposed to leave there was a ...... mysterious fire caused by... the cops never figured it out....
anyway her sister died in the fire and her mom was somewhat injured but nothing permanent
hayden took her sister’s identity at first to try to make people think she was a bad person??? it was petty teenager shit really
but once her parents saw how she was acting after the fire, she was put in therapy for a whiiiiiiile which was where she learned how to really lie and convince people she was fine and that she was actually hayden
once she was off to college she decided to drop out without telling her parents, collecting their monthly allowance and using it to pay for the cute apartment she got
pretty soon after she started to strip, finding it to be therapeutic and fun most of the time but frustrating a tiny fraction of the time (not long enough for her to quit)
when she was around 20, her parents found out about her lies about college and cut her off, but by then she’d had enough money to afford to do pretty much whatever she wanted so she moved to boston
she looooves it here but she still doesn’t really open up to people unless she’s very very very close to them and has told absolutely no one about the whole “oops i killed my twin” thing
TL;DR
born lucy, goes by hayden because she killed her twin sister in a fire and stole her identity
works as a stripper and has since she was 18
moved to boston at 20
not in contact with her parents
hasn’t told anyone about the whole identity thing
WANTED CONNECTIONS
exes
ex-fwbs
regulars at the club she works at
people she knew from childhood (i didnt really say where she’s from so this is open)
actual close friends
friends who think they’re close friends
i feel like she wouldn’t really have enemies but i love an argument

OMGOSH THIS WAS BEAUTIFUL 😭❤️
let it snow
For @authorgirl0131, for the Seven Realms Secret Santa!
General | Han Alister/Raisa ana’Marianna | Fluff, Snowball Fight, Ice Skating, Canon Compliant, Post-Canon
Summary: The first snowfall after the events of The Crimson Crown.
Read it on AO3 or below the cut.
The snow fell gently, dusting the city below Raisa ana’Marianna as she stood in her room, looking out of the window.
It had been three months since her marriage — three months married to Han, three months since the Demonai and wizards had worked together to rout the Ardenine army and General Klemath’s mercenaries, three months in which Montaigne had licked his wounds and failed to mount any serious attack. Raisa knew his counterattack would be coming — she had refused his hand in marriage and then defeated him in battle; there was no way he’d ever let her go — but he wouldn’t make a move until the summer. If he tried it now, his troops would freeze, starve, and/or be easy pickings for the Demonai. For now, Fells was safe.
Warm arms wrapped around her from behind, but Raisa didn’t flinch, turning to face Han as he held her close. “You weren’t there when I woke up,” he said in explanation, voice rough with sleep.
“My apologies.” She smiled, leaning in to kiss him, and forgot about the world for a moment in the feel of his lips on hers.
Han pulled back, however, shivering slightly. “It’s cold. Come back to bed.”
“Consider that you might only be cold because you’re not wearing a shirt,” Raisa replied.
“Are you complaining?”
“Of course not.” She grinned at him, running her hands across his shoulders and down his arms, pressing a kiss to his collarbone and noting the goosebumps that appeared along his skin. “You’re the one saying you’re cold.”
He huffed, kissing her again, probably to get her to stop talking. “Is there a reason you’re awake?”
“It’s snowing.”
Han followed her gaze out of the window. “Good for keeping the Ardenine army away,” he noted.
“And also for snowball fights.”
“We are not going to have a snowball fight,” Han said.
~
They were having a snowball fight.
And in the courtyard of the castle, no less. The snow had fallen thick and fast, as it usually did in the Fells, burying the courtyard in a foot-thick layer. Raisa had cancelled all the meetings for the day (“it’s snowing, General Dunedain, Arne isn’t about to invade, I think today’s meeting can wait”) and he’d been helpless to resist as she dragged him outside. Cat and Dancer had come as well.
Perhaps the snowball fight was slightly childish, but Han didn’t particularly care, because he got to see Raisa laugh (even if the price was taking a snowball to the head).
Han burst out laughing in turn at the look on Raisa’s face as his snowball slammed into her, though he stopped when Cat’s perfectly aimed return throw knocked him back a step. Dancer sent two snowballs back at the girls, one of which Raisa dodged while the other hit Cat on the shoulder. Raisa ducked behind a makeshift barricade she’d built, and Han raised a snowball, ready to throw as soon as she reappeared — only to get hit in the face by another snowball from Cat, which made him miss his moment and get hit three times by Raisa before he brushed enough snow out of his face that he could see. Dancer had managed to get Cat, but she’d retaliated viciously and he was retreating beneath her attack.
The two boys regrouped behind their own barricade. “Wish we could use magic,” Han complained.
“We’d win too easily,” Dancer replied. That, of course, was precisely why they’d agreed that magic was cheating, and it was true that it’d give them an unfair advantage, especially with Dancer’s unique ability to control the elements (including the snow itself) — but that didn’t change the fact that they were going to lose without it.
With a sigh, Han began making snowballs by hand. “Last-ditch attempt to charge them?”
Dancer nodded, and the two stood up from the wall they’d built to run at the girls, who immediately bombarded them with snowballs. Cat launched herself over the barrier at Dancer, knocking him down. Han didn’t stop, however, running all the way to the barricade behind which Raisa was standing as she threw snowballs.
They ended up lying in the snow, Raisa sitting on top of him with a snowball raised threateningly, and he couldn’t resist pulling her down into a kiss. The snowball dropped harmlessly into a drift beside him.
Then, of course, he had to use the moment to his advantage and shove some snow into her face. The moments that it took her to re-orient herself allowed him to get well away before she began to chase after him, screaming bloody murder, and he knew he’d most likely end up with his own faceful of snow.
~
There was a small lake a little way away from Fellsmarch, and Raisa snuck away from Cat and Dancer (not particularly difficult, as they were making out, though perhaps she wasn’t one to judge) to bring Han there.
She remembered skating there many times as a child, her mother showing her how to balance on the skates and then how to move on them, how to turn, how to spin, how to go backwards, until she was as nimble on the ice as she was on land, if not more so. It’d been one of the few times that she hadn’t felt jealous of Mellony for the attention that she got from their mother — Mellony had been too young to skate when Raisa had started, and even when she was old enough, she preferred to stay inside.
So Raisa had fond memories of the lake, and she hoped she could make more now, with Han at her side. If the lake was frozen, that is; it was early enough in the year that it might not be, but the temperature was low enough that she hoped so. And if not, they could always come back some other time.
“I don’t know how to ice skate,” Han protested.
“I taught you how to dance, I can teach you to skate,” she replied teasingly.
Han smiled involuntarily, and they continued on to the lake.
It was indeed frozen, and it didn’t crack when they threw rocks into the middle, so Raisa pulled on the skates she’d brought before helping Han with the ones she’d got him. He stood up, wavering slightly as he tried to balance, but he managed to remain standing.
“Now follow me,” she said.
Han fell. Several times. By the third time, she’d realized that she needed to stick closer beside him rather than expecting him to know how to skate immediately (it should have been obvious, but it had been a long time since she’d learned to skate herself), and so she held his hands, moving backward while facing him so that he could find his feet.
That meant, of course, that when he fell, she fell as well, and they ended up on the ground together more often than not. The falls grew less often as time went on, though, until Raisa went from skating backwards to skating at his side, holding hands. It eventually became clear that they really didn’t need to be holding hands any longer — Han wasn’t falling much anymore — but neither one particularly wanted to let go.
She told him about all those days learning to skate here, and the conversation devolved into simply discussing their lives, telling stories about all those little details of the other’s life that they’d never had a chance to learn. They didn’t discuss the war, by mutual if silent consensus, and Raisa didn’t think she’d ever laughed so much before.
Eventually, however, they started to feel cold, and they had to pack up and head home. Magret had somehow known that they were coming, bringing them mugs of hot cocoa as they sat by the fire in their room. Cat complained that she was supposed to be Raisa’s bodyguard, and she couldn’t exactly protect her if she was constantly running off, but subsided when Magret offered her a mug of cocoa as well.
~
Somebody found a board game, and the evening passed in warmth and laughter (aside from the fact that Cat was definitely cheating, though nobody seemed to believe Han when he said so — perhaps it was because he was winning, despite Cat’s cheating). Raisa curled up, leaning against his shoulder, watching Cat and Han bicker while Dancer laughed at the two of them and Magret served seemingly unending mugs of cocoa.
Tomorrow, they’d have to think about Arne again, about Montaigne’s plans for revenge, about the war. But for now, it was snowing outside, and the fire was warm, and the worries could wait until tomorrow.
Han smiled, an arm curving up to hold Raisa close.
